13, 2003|09:38 pm]
Anatoly Vorobey
The following was suggested by a friend as an example of a sentence that is particularly hard to recast into a grammatical and graceful form without losing the flavor of the original.

The sentence:

There are five people on this list who I'm not sure whether they have degrees.

  • Five people on this list may not have degrees; I'm not sure.
  • There are five people on this list who I'm not sure have degrees
  • I don't know whether 5 people on this list have degrees.

  • Five people on this list, I'd bet, don't have degrees.
  • There are five people on this list who may not have degrees, but I'm not sure.
  • There are five people on this list who might not have degrees.
  • Five people on this list may or may not have degrees.
  • Five of the people on this list may not have degrees; I'm not sure.
  • There are five people on this list who I'm not certain have degrees.
  • There are five people on this list of whom I'm not sure whether they have degrees.
  • There are five people on this list whom I am unsure whether they have degrees.
  • There are five people on this list who may or may not have degrees - I'm not sure.
  • For five people on this list, I'm not sure whether they have degrees.
  • I'm not sure whether five specific members of this list have degrees.
  • Degree or not degree, that is the question I have about five people on this list.
  • Of the people on this list, there are five for whom I have no information regarding their degrees.
  • I am not sure whether five specific individuals on this list have degrees.
  • There are five people on this list who I'm not sure about. Perhaps they do have degrees, perhaps they don't.
  • There are five people on this list whose degree status I am not sure of.
  • Listmates Gladys, Prudence, Orville, Stanley, and Adeline have me wondering: do they have degrees, or don't they?
