Две книги о том, как на самом деле жили/вели себя/одевались/говорили ковбои в конце 19 века, написанные очевидцами:

Emerson Hough, The story of the cowboy (1897)

P.A.Rollins, The cowboy; his characteristics, his equipment, and his part in the development of the West (1922)

Я их нашел, чтобы разобраться в вопросе про ремни и пряжки. Ну и полистал еще немного, но читать все-таки сейчас не буду, не настолько интересно. Но хорошо написано, и наверное достоверно.

Любопытно, что оказывается кроме слова cowboy было также в ходу и широко распостранено cowpuncher или просто puncher.

Забавная цитата из второй книги:
The gun not only was an integral part of full dress, but also was to the mind of the cowboy as effective on the female heart, and as compelling an accompaniment of love-making as to the belief of the young soldier has ever been the sword.

The fewness of women in the Cattle Country did not lessen man's wish to go a-courting. Any female could get a husband. An attractive one could choose from an army.

(love-making тут означает "ухаживание", а не то, что вы подумали)

(меня позабавило еще, как автор тут использует ученое слово fewness. Мог же написать по-простому, по-народному: dearth, paucity, или на худой конец scarcity, но вот надо ему ученость свою показать)

Her engagement in the fight against prostitution sprang from the matrix of the shock she

problem of an internal, spiritual and intellectual poverty that had to be comprehended in social terms, not merely as something individual.
